FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 4, 2022
SMMCTA ENDORSEMENTS FOR THE 2022 SMMUSD SCHOOL BOARD
The Santa Monica Malibu Classroom Teachers Association’s (SMMCTA) Political Action Committee (PAC) and its representative council members voted by a large majority to endorse four candidates for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Board of Education. The four candidates, selected on September 19 for four open seats are:
● Laurie Lieberman
● Alicia Mignano
● Stacy Rouse
● Dr. Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein
The recommendation for endorsements were made after research and interviews of all seven candidates for SMMUSD School Board. SMMCTA PAC members presented their findings to the full Representative Assembly, which is composed of elected delegates from all school sites in the district. The Representative Assembly discussed and debated the PAC endorsement recommendation, then voted, with the noted results for endorsement.
After going through this process, SMMCTA feels confident that the four candidates ultimately endorsed, Lieberman, Tahvildaran-Jesswein, Mignano, and Rouse, align most strongly with SMMCTA values. They are committed to collaboration with all stakeholders and will work diligently to make sure all SMMUSD schools provide opportunities and programs that students deserve and will support them in reaching their full potential.
Incumbents Laurie Lieberman and Dr. Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein impressed the committee members with their continued commitment of respect for SMMCTA members as professionals. They believe in fair compensation for all our members and they supported the
elimination of healthcare tiers. Moreover, they share a commitment toward our teacher-led equity initiatives such as detracking.
Alicia Mignano and Stacy Rouse impressed the PAC members with their many years of volunteer service for Santa Monica and Malibu students and programs. The PAC committee and Representative Assembly are confident that both Mignano and Rouse will work to create a fiscally responsible budget to allow for ongoing maintenance and improved plans for healthy learning environments, while keeping cuts as far away from classrooms as possible.
All candidates demonstrated a strong commitment to make the investments necessary to reduce class sizes and improve the quality of equitable education for all students.
Through these endorsements, SMMCTA feels confident that re-electing Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein and Laurie Lieberman, as well as electing newcomers Alicia Mignano and Stacy Rouse, would establish an SMMUSD School Board that will work together successfully for the schools its students, educators, and communities deserve.
